New Flaget dress code approved Students attending Vincennes Catholic Schools may be wearing more uniform clothing in coming years if a new dress code is approved, according to board president Kevin Doyle.

The board approved the first reading of a new policy which would require Flaget students to wear polo shirts and khaki pants or skirts daily beginning in the 2003-2004 school year. Rivet Middle and High School students would begin wearing the uniform the following school year. "We want to have a dress code that is simple to follow and enforce for the administrators but that still allows the students to express their individuality and have some flexibility," Doyle said. "The students will have more variety in choosing shirt colors." The new policy is four years in the making and still must be adopted by the board next month. Currently students must wear the khaki-and-polo ensemble one day a week, usually Wednesday, or if they go on field trips.

The adoption of an updated dress code has become necessary, Doyle said, because so many contemporary clothes, especially for girls, are inappropriate for school. A tuition increase was also approved, raising the price for parish members by $165 per year. Non-parish families will pay an additional $240 annually. "We always have a little bit of increase so we can keep up with salary increases for our teachers," Doyle said. "But it seems any ground we gain is lost in operating costs, especially with rising utility and insurance costs." Vincennes Schools are funded by tuition, local parishes and money raised by the Christian Education Foundation.

They would then, hopefully, allocate funds to meet those Dearwester said the study is scheduled to be completed by the end of April. Knox County Housing Authority Director Mary Lou Terrell said the biggest need in the county is rental properties. "We have virtually no rental properties in our area," Terrell said. "Many of the elderly in places like Oaktown, Bicknell and Freelandville rent, but that doesn't help the families, especially in the northern Knox County area.

"A lot of people don't realize the impact rental properties have on towns," Terrell said. "People who rent eat, buy gas and go to schools in these towns. If they put 50 rental units in Oaktown, that could mean up to 100 children and then maybe the North Knox School Corporation might not have to close one of their buildings." and was being held on $10,000 bond.
