6-A- THE PLAIN DEALER, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, Marcos clashes with archbishop LOS ANGELES TIMES -MANILA, Philippines President Ferdinand E. Marcos accused the nation's highest-ranking Roman Catholic prelate yesterday of "fanning the flames of rebellion" and warned that troops might break up an anti-government rally scheduled for tomorrow and arrest the business leaders organizing it. In his sharpest clash ever with Cardinal Jaime L. Sin, Manila's outspoken archbishop, Marcos charged the prelate with "trying to destabilize the government" and with violating the separation of church and state. Marcos was obviously angered by Sin's recent call for business leaders to join students and others in nonviolent demonstrations against the government.

it Marcos threatened to arrest businessmen, professionals and tomorrow's planned rally, for which no permit had been issued by late yesterday. Sin is scheduled to celebrate mass for the demonstrators but is not expected to march with them. "I'm going to say mass," the cardinal said through a spokesman after Marcos' speech. "Shall I be arrested for saying mass?" 42 Sin, a frequent critic of Marcos and of administration policies that the cardinal considers repressive, stepped up his attacks in the wake of violent clashes late last month between police and. anti-government demonstrators that left one person dead and scores injured.
