I consider myself a skincare-product skeptic. This is because my sensitive skin gets itchy and inflamed as soon as it touches any ingredient it doesn’t like. When I try a new face lotion, serum, or cleanser, I never know what to expect. Will my skin glow and feel as soft as a baby’s bottom? Or will I breakout in blotchy red patches? We will see!
So, when I first heard all the hype around Peach and Lily’s Glass Skin Refining Serum, I was intrigued but suspicious. Does it really work? Will it make my face break out? What even is serum? These questions rushed through my head whenever I saw the pink and white bottle on my Instagram feed.
But, after hearing a close friend rave about how silky the serum made her skin, I finally decided to give it a shot. Every morning and evening, I applied it to my face and neck. And after a month, the changes to my skin were undeniable.
Upon waking, I now look less splotchy and more like someone with, dare I say, an even skin tone. My skin also feels supple and looks brighter. Thanks to high school acne, I have my fair share of tiny bumps and scars. But now my skin feels so ridiculously smooth, I’ve developed this interesting habit of petting my forehead and cheeks every couple hours. The best part? No irritation.
I’ve used the serum for years now, and the hype is real.
Pro tip: To look like my ultimate glowy icon (baby Hercules), I pair Glass Skin with this dewy sunscreen. The end result is stunning, radiant skin.
Do you have a product that you always finish? Are you, too, part of the sensitive skin club? I also swear by this game-changer.
P.S. Caroline’s desert island beauty product and five summer beauty trends.

As a Canuck, I had the chance to vacation in the US and picked up a bottle of this serum. WOW is all I can say. Even after the first use, I felt a huge different. Thank you for sharing…. a fellow former skin care sceptic.

Talking about the best beauty products, I am more inclined toward natural ingredients. Like Jojoba serum with probiotic Jojoba milk. Ever since my first use, I have emptied 4 bottles. Loved the product a lot.

I always finish PCA’s facial wash – never dries me out and effectively removes sunscreen, One Love Organics Vit B cleansing oil – smells delicious and feels luxurious, and The Ordinary’s reservatrol and ferulic acid serum – makes you GLOW

aside from my esthetician, i’ve only met one other person (the woman who helps me at sephora!!!) who knows the brand, so reading this was very affirming. i swear by one love organics, especially the vitamin b cleansing oil. i use their skin dew moisturizer and easy does it cleanser as well. i’ve been using them for years and now, and when i come in for an annual or semi-annual facial, my esthetician is just so proud and blown away. huge wins!!!

Everyone can have this skin if (a) they gently wash their face every night before bed and (b) are loving and kind to BOTH of their Japanese parents. No serum required.

I have relatively sensitive skin, a lot of allergies, and try to use science-backed products in a mix of drugstore brands and splurges:
Morning:
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser – (use during shower)
Skinceuticals CE Ferulic – (the best Vitamin C for me, but it is ungodly expensive)
CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion – (my skin can be a bit dry so this is my daily)
La Roche Posay Double Repair SPF 30 – (love the texture of this for daily use; I use EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 for hiking / beach / other outdoor activities)
Evening:
Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micellar – (for removing makeup, then wash face with just water)
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA – (use almost every night, but occasionally, like once a week, replace with one of the other products listed below)
Paula’s Choice 10% AHA
Sunday Riley Good Genes – (also ridiculously expensive)
Planning to add in a retinol very slowly, by using about 2x a week at night and working my way up to greater frequency and eventually slightly stronger formulations.

Sounds like we have a very similar approach to skincare and use the same brands! Not sure if Medik8 is available where you live but their retinol is the best I’ve found for my skin- gentle formulations from a science led brand and lots of intensity levels to scale up through :)

Hello Janelle, quick question from Poland, where this tempting product will be a much bigger splurge for me than buying in the US :) Are you using the serum INSTEAD OF moisturizer? Or IN ADDITION TO — and if so, in what order do you use the serum + moisturizer? Thanks so much!

Thanks to a blog I regularly read on children’s books….Everyday reading
https://everyday-reading.com/ by Jannsen Bradshaw I discovered Hero Force Shield SPF30…it has a greenish tint which in my mind evens things out a bit and just soaks right in…I’m here in Texas where we on on our 25 day of 100 temps so this is all I use. Too hot for makeup!! I get it at Ulta and it is 19.99 ! If you have early readers in your life Ms. Bradshaw’s blog is very fun and useful.

I just started using Peach & Lily’s Ginger Melt Oil Cleanser and loooooove it. Then I use Ghost Democracy’s Vitamin C serum before slathering on their Hylauronic Acid serum. For eye cream, I use 100% Pure’s Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream. I feel like I’ve tried it all, and these are the ones I end up rebuying time and time again! When winter hits, I end up nightly “slugging” with CeraVe ointment or Aquaphor per my Scandinavian roots/grandmother’s rituals to keep skin hydrated during the long winters, even though I live in California now!

In the AM, I either just rinse with water or may use a gentle cleanser if my face feels really sweaty from my morning workout. I apply azelaic acid to my damp skin (thanks for the rosacea, dad!) and apply moisturizer afterwards. I am really loving Malezia’s urea moisturizer. I’ve learned so much from the founder’s blog, Simple Skincare Science, and love his moisturizer! I apply mineral sunscreen afterwards. My favorites are by Coco*kind, Pipette, and Biossance.
The product I’ve repurchased the most is Jordan Samuel’s after show treatment cleanser for sensitive skin. I use that first to break down my sunscreen, and then I wash my face with a gentle cleanser. I’m currently using the iS Clinicals one, and I really like it. I apply .025 tretinoin to my skin 3x/week and then use the Walgreens AHA cream on Saturdays. The other nights I just apply my moisturizer and then some Vaseline, and I’m good!

La Roche Posay cicaplast balm = all purpose miracle product for me!
I thought it would be greasy and pore-clogging because the texture is rich, but it’s just soothing without clogging pores. I apply it anywhere I have a “problem” of any kind: dryness, irritation, acne, redness, under eye, even lips. Feels like the Windex thing from Big Fat Greek Wedding, but it truly helps me with anything, and I have super sensitive combination acne prone skin and I live in a way humid climate.

I am in sensitive sunscreen club too. I can’t use elta, supergoop, any of that. I almost bought the tatcha one at Sephora when an awesome sales person showed me the biossance line. It has zinc and squalane oil in it. I wrote an earlier comment about squalane oil. I was a person very afraid of oils for a long time but this one does not irritate my skin. You need to work it in in small amounts or it will feel tacky. I also hormonal my acne prone. One of the ways I simplified my routine was by adding in spearmint supplements. It’s been more effective at than birth control and spironolactone for me. I hope someone finds this helpful💖

I’m also a skin care skeptic because nothing ever seems to make a noticeable difference! It feels like a scam and I’ve been a minimalist for years. But this week I picked up a watermelon overnight mask at Trader Joe’s (just for funsies, since it was like $7 and I love fruit) and I swear it makes my skin a little more glowing. It’s a dupe for a Glow Recipes product, and it makes me want to try more things from Glow.

I love skincare/make-up posts, but I would be interested to know more about what procedures (if any) CoJ authors follow in terms of cosmetic dermatology etc. Mostly because I find that this kind of information is largely absent (although inseparable) from product reviews. I am speaking to the wider blogosphere here, not singling CoJ out…this just happens to be the blog I visit most often. I hope this doesn’t come across as though I am throwing shade on any of the post authors- nobody is obligated to disclose this kind of private information (I personally cringe when people compliment my “youthful” skin and my response is “sunscreen”, followed after a lengthy pause by “…and botox” and that’s just among close friends. I know this is something people often prefer to be discreet about because there is a LOT of judgment out there on cosmetic dermatology!) Anyway, I love all the product reviews for “glowy” products, but when I read reviews like this I sometimes wonder if I’m getting the entire picture.
P.S. Yes! I would absolutely love to see more hair tutorials :-)

I appreciate this comment. Personally I am against any procedures for myself. I’m often told I look younger for my age, but I do look older than I did 10 years ago. That being said, I can run the comparison game all too often only to find out someone looks “younger” due to cosmetic procedures. It makes me think of all the years I compared myself to magazine images only to discover EVERYTHING was photoshopped. Transparency is valuable.

Hi Roisin! Your point and question is so valid, thanks for bringing it up! We’ll definitely think about how we can approach this topic because I think a lot of people are curious.
I personally don’t use botox, but I’m not against it and can see myself trying it out. A couple of my friends started using it in their late 20’s and they’ve all had great experiences and look amazing.
I also think that transparency is super valuable, and I appreciate how my friends who do use it are open about it.
Katie Sturino is really open about her use of botox, and talks about it a lot on her Instagram. Here’s a link from one of her older posts: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl6VPt6HDcC/?hl=en
And I’ll brainstorm some fun hair post ideas :) xo

Its funny when people say “I would never do that” – and they’re stunningly youthful at the time… then let’s see what happens when at 47 their neck start to resemble a goose, and by 49 there is no hiding it those are jowls…. whilst I still have not have any invasive procedures at all, it’s simply my moral high horse that holds me back… instead I spent all my time bemoaning internally how fat and old I am. I imagine those who got the face jobs are probably off living a glamorous life. who knows, maybe as per the weekend articles, maybe husband swapping with a younger model.

My biggest skin irritant is chemical sunscreen. I would definitely be rashy if I used the Supergoop. It’s annoying because so few mineral sunscreens go on without feeling thick and leaving a white cast. I use Babo Botanicals and it’s ok, but I’m waiting for the day that less irritating chemical sunscreens are approved for the American market.

Same here, Leah! Have you tried MDSolarSciences Mineral Kidcreme? I have rosacea and super sensitive skin and always struggled to find sunscreen that wouldn’t upset my skin but was also cosmetically elegant (very hard to find in a mineral sunscreen). I discovered MDSolarsciences Kidcreme a few months ago and I’m OBSESSED. Totally invisible on me, plus it’s pore-blurring and has a beautiful, natural looking finish.

My skincare faves:
1. Fancy Farm Goat Milk Bar Soap for face (and the whole body) they do restocks every couple weeks: https://fancyfarmskincare.com/products/farm-fresh-goat-milk-tallow-soap-bar
2. I use the above-mentioned soap with Pai muslin cloths https://www.paiskincare.us/products/organic-muslin-face-cloth-pack
3. Facenearth Colloidal Silver Green Tea Chamomile Toner: https://www.etsy.com/listing/213751980/colloidal-silver-green-tea-chamomile
4. Still in search of a serum ride-or-die but like the Cos de BAHA Niacinamide 10% and their Centella serum https://www.iherb.com/c/cos-de-baha
5. HUM Nutrition Daily Cleanse (I’ve bought so many bottles of this I swear it works, it’s not an overnight miracle but always seems to add an extra layer of protection against blemishes)
6. Bone broth, spearmint tea, and other herbal teas like moringa and hibiscus (taste great and a great way to get vitamins too)
What I avoid: chemical exfoliators, Vitamin C for skin, anything fermented for skin, retinol. I know people rave about these ingredients and say there’s a purging period and all that, but for now it’s just not for me, I’ve tried. I’ll focus on gentle nourishing hydration for now, that seems to work.

You might try the gals at Haldi for recs – it is started by a woman on a mission for clean products, and for those overwhelmed at the big box (ahem U— and S–_). You fill out a quiz and questions and then they make recs based on skin, what you are looking for etc. They gave me some recs at the higher end of my price point, and then when I emailed them, they offered alternatives at a lower price point. I found it super helpful – and have liked what I bought so far (there is no pressure to buy any or all of what they recommend for your routine btw).
You can google Haldi, or i’ll link here – https://haldi.com/?referredBy=heathertemplinfriends (if you use thru this link and choose to get anything, I think I get some points or something, but obviously you don’t have to!)

Christina Moss makes great eye cream and moisturizer. The eye cream has a scent, but it disappears quickly. My skin is allergic to everything – fragrance, alcohol, polypropolene glycol, which is in everything. Other than these two products, my skin routine is basically marula oil for cleansing and overnight moisturizing. CM has a website or that website named after a tribe of powerful women carries it, too.

Last summer, due to a poorly timed need to take Sulfa antibiotics, I became sensitized to a LOT of sunscreens. I had rashes across my face all summer long as I tried to find something that wouldn’t make my skin break out in hives so dense they made my skin look like poorly tanned red full-grain leather. Unfortunately, Unseen Sunscreen’s products are all on that list.
I’m had an OK time with Bare Republic’s face sunscreen, although it’s kinda chalky, there are other “all mineral” products that haven’t worked (I’m currently recovering from a chest rash brought on by “All Good”!). Does anyone else have EXTREME sunscreen sensitivity and have good recommendations?
Thank you a million times in advance.

It could be a sensitivity to sun – some antibiotics cause sun/photo sensitivity and for many who get that, it remains long afterwards.

i HIGHLY recommend Keys Solar Rx Moisturizer Sunblock spf 30. I’ve been using this stuff for years. no chemicals, doesn’t have that weird sunscreen smell, feels good on my face, doesn’t leave a white cast, SUPER clean (it scores “1” on the EWG scale) and protects my skin from the sun. it’s the first sunscreen i actually LIKE putting on my face.

I have rosacea and my skin reacts to a lot of sunscreens. I like the Paula’s Choice mineral sunscreens and MyChelle mineral. I mix them together because the tint from Paula’s Choice alone is too dark for my skin tone.

Helen Kaminski’s Newport hats – tightly woven matte straw with a four inch deep crown and brim that shades my face well. Lots of other styles, too, some with five inch brims. The rest of my body I keep covered for the most part, but it will tolerate sunscreen for a day here and there.

Sensitive skin with rosacea and a lotttt of sunscreens irritate my face. Supergoop and Biossance were both no gos for me, but my HG is now Paula’s Choice. The essential glow mineral moisturizer is my favorite for day-to-day wear and feels really good on my dry skin. If I’m going to be outside, I’ll put on Cetaphil’s mineral liquid sunscreen for face. You could definitely wear it daily, but I find it a little thicker than the Paula’s Choice one. Sephora offers free returns and Paula’s Choice’s website has sample sizes to ty things out. I hope you find your perfect sunscreen!

I’m reading this in 2024, but my derm recommended LaRoche Posay like 20 years ago for extreme sun sensitivity (esp. in low latitudes – RASH CITY). I used to order it from Canada because it hadn’t gone through the FDA approval process yet, but now that it’s readily available at any drugstore in the U.S. too, it’s so much easier.

I have very sensitive skin as well so try to be very careful when trying new serums so it’s always good to hear a rec from someone with similar skin. The vitamin C ones have typically been ok but I’ve been staying away from retinol even though so many recommend it because I’m super pale and live in a very sunny place already so making my skin even more sun-sensitive seems dangerous. My ride-or-die product that I can’t quit is the La Roche Posay tinted mineral face sunscreen. I’ve been wearing it everyday instead of regular makeup for years now. I hardly ever see it in lists of people’s favorites but it works so well for me and is relatively affordable and easy to find so I feel compelled to spread the word xo

I keep it very simple and will cautiously try new products once a year or so. Out of the new product experiments, I rarely find something that makes enough difference to keep using.
My skincare keepers are:
Everyday Oil, EltaMD UV Clear 46, Bioderma Micellar Water, Dove bar soap, Cetaphil cream
I’ve tried a few acid-based products with mixed results. Nothing seems to really make a difference in my sensitive, combo, dermatitis prone skin. Right now I’m using the Ordinary’s mandelic acid serum and it’s so-so.

Does anyone else get Jessica Delfino’s newsletter The Unpublishable? https://jessicadefino.substack.com/

I love her ethos and critical learning lens about the structural systems of power and oppression that play into our cultural understanding of “beauty”. Highly highly recommend and my favorite current beauty secret is unlearning those systems! And sunscreen haha.

Yes! Her writing is all I could think about.
I love how she’s made me rethink the beauty industry. But I do struggle sometimes with really accepting my skin as it is. I have tried stopping using products (never felt like I’ve had some miracle product anyway), but I still don’t like looking at my skin. And the first thing I jump to is wanting to fix it. Is my skin healthy as it is? Does it need support somehow? Or is this what she’s trying to help me accept? That my skin is beautiful as it is?
Whew, I didnt realize I have so many feelings about skin beauty standards!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I’ve just read so much of it and it really resonates with many thoughts and feelings I’ve been having around beauty. Especially as I’m starting to age and on the one hand say it’s okay and yet on the other feel compelled to try to stop it visibly with a serum or cream or glow.
I think I’ve got to stop supporting this corrupt and unjust industry with my money and time! I thought beauty like a bright lipstick brought me joy, but I think that’s simply capitalisms charming allure. And joy at the cost of the planet or others unfair working conditions cannot be my true joy.
I’ve got so many thoughts to work through on this! It feels so deep and messy untangling the beauty culture and norms that live inside me.

I think Unpublishable is doing work but I’ve noticed women on the subreddit putting undue pressure on themselves to reject the aspects of beauty culture they enjoy. Seems like just another side of the same coin: women feeling like they’re “supposed” to do a certain thing.

Thank you. I will try this product.
For decades, the only cream I can use on my face is Ponds facial moisturizer.
When I dare try new creams, I put cream on my forehead, and one outer cheek for a few days. A couple are usable, but with minimal difference from the affordable Ponds.

Hi Dawn! I am a skincare minimalist too and don’t generally spend a ton on products. I followed some derms on Instagram, and for drugstore versions of these things, most recommended Cerave for Vitamin C and Differin for retinol. I’ve been using both for a few months and am seeing slow improvement in my skin.

I’ve watched a lot of skin care youtubers test out a lot of products. I particularly like Angie from Hot and Flashy because she’s a little bit older than me and skincare is her PASSION. http://www.youtube.com/user/HotandFlashy
She has consistently loved the the brand Timeless – specifically their Vitamin C Serum. I’ve been using it for about 2 years – love it.

Fellow skincare minimalist! My night routine consists of rinsing with water (I don’t wear foundation and my skin is perpetually dry, this is all it can handle), then using Differin and pond’s cream+cerave (ponds is optional—in the winter definitely, or any time I’m in the A/C at night), and cerave in the morning. That’s it! 3 things, sometimes just two.
I would die for my Differin (or whatever form of Adapalene .1%—I’m using a CVS knock off rn and it works the same). But! It takes like 4 months to see results. Also, I did have a pretty insane purge period (for 3 months it was BAD, but I was also having major stress acne bc it was the beginning of the pandemic so I’m not always sure where to put blame). Totally changed the texture of my skin and reduced acne scars better than I could’ve anticipated. I want to try something with vitamin C, but I have not yet, mostly cause I heard it makes you more sun-sensitive and I am SO THERE ALREADY lol. I have used the Ordinary’s Niacinamide, and I like it, but I’m not absolutely in love. I probably will not buy more once I’m out.
Hope that helps in some way!

As a doctor (albeit not a derm) what I have been told by derm friends is that retinoids and sunscreen are really the only anti-aging stuff that works. I have been using retinoids now for years – the flakey redness at the outset is tough but can be managed by going to every other day. Need a good sunscreen and moisturizer but well worth the initial pain. Everything else is largely woo woo.

I’ve been using both the Bare Minerals Ageless face moisturizer and neck moisturizer that has a plant based retinol in it and have really liked them. Retinol irritates my skin and after trying so many different brands that I’ve had sensitivities to, I’ve had great luck with this line! (Also, I wish they would drop the ‘Ageless’ in the name, but overall, the product is wonderful). I also second CeraVe’s vitamin C serum and have had good results with Maelove’s Glowmaker as well.

I second Hot n Flashy on YouTube…good science, real deal…and I also like her rec of Timeless Vitamin C. I’m pretty sure it’s a dupe of Skinceuticals since their patent ran out and their formula can now be replicated.
I really like Curology for retinoid…it’s a prescription strength product and you get a derm assigned to you who will work with you on easing into retinoids. I wouldn’t waste my time or money on over the counter retinols, tbh. Get the real thing and commit.
Also agree that sunscreen + retinoids are the products with actual science behind them, but I’d add Vitamin C and some of the acids in. (AHA and BHAs, for example.) I used to spend a lot of money on products, but now it’s just sunscreen, retinoid, C, and the occasional exfoliation with AHA. My skin is honestly pretty amazing.

As a dermatologist who is a minimalist, I echo what Dawn and RMS have said. A retinoid (adapalene, tretinoin) will most reliably help with fine lines and sun spots, but it is slow to work. It causes your skin to produce a tiny bit more collagen and helps skin turn over a bit faster. Differin gel (now OTC) used to be the lowest strength prescription retinoid. If you want a little more oomph, then the tretinoin creams are a little stronger although more irritating for the skin. Your skin does get used to it with consistent use, and if you get irritation, switching to every other night or 3 nights per week may help. Another trick is it make sure you are putting it on dry skin, not damp skin.
Vitamin C serums help to diminish discoloration and sunspots on the skin. The tricky thing about the Vitamin C is that it’s hard to stabilize, so it degrades in the serum over time. Skinceuticals makes a good one that stays stable in the serum, but it’s hella expensive.
Niacinamide helps to get rid of redness in the skin. EltaMD UV clear has a bit of niacinimide in it, which is nice for those who have a redder complexion.
And yes, the sun creates havoc on the skin. See this photo: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmicm1104059
Most derms avoid the sun because we know what it can do! Don’t discount clothing and hats. I often find sunscreen to be a bit unreliable, although I do put it on my exposed skin and personally like shade, large brimmed sunhats and tightly woven clothing.

Before you give retinoids a go, starting with an OTC retinol may be helpful. Cerave resurfacing retinol serum and the Good Molecules retinol cream are my recommendations. I like Dr. Brenner’s vitamin C serum. My friend who has very sensitive skin uses Mad Hippie vitamin C, and it’s never given her a problem. If you’re looking for an effective drugstore AHA, I’ve been a devoted user of the Walgreens in house AHA cream. It’s usually on the bottom shelf. It makes my face glow!

I’m impressed by some of these routines! How do people balance all these serums/creams/potions with any prescription face medication? I’m on 2 creams for pretty bad adult acne (they are handling it ok, but not great). I like the idea of being a person who has a luxury skin care routine, but I’m scared to layer it on top of the prescriptions. Would love any thoughts & advice!

I think keeping things simple is always the way to go. Your derm knows a lot more than us internet amateurs! I will say that Vanicream (both the tube moisturizer and the original pump version) makes great products that really help when your face is feeling sensitized. The general rule of thumb to layering products is to apply products from lightest to heaviest.

Not a product, but my go to skin care tips are free: 1) always always wash your hands before touching your face – the oils! – or you will break out more often. I say this as a chronic face touch (especially when stressed). 2) Clean your phone frequently, especially in the summer when everyone is sweating. When I talk on the phone, sweat and accumulated product (sunscreen in particular) accumulates on my phone. If I don’t clean it frequently, then those things come right back to my face the next time I use the phone, leading to yet more break outs.

After struggling with acne for the last ten years, I’m happy just to have skin that isn’t painful to touch. Eventually, I found using a combo of hormonal birth control, Curology prescription skincare, a very basic moisturizer and a very gentle cleanser would result in only a little breakout before my period every month (and at this point a small breakout is as good as perfect skin to me). So that’s been my safe-space routine for the last few years. I’m also like that with meals and workout routines – anything that has been proven safe stays in the routine FOREVER.
BUT I’d love to add something new to spice things up, and Janelle’s glow is making a good case for this serum!

I have been LOVING Moon Juice’s Milk Cleanser! I have sensitive skin and feel like most face washes I’ve tried dry me out and give me that tight, itchy, irritated feeling. This one doesn’t! And it is gentle and smells lovely. I’ve also been loving Maelove’s Sun Protector (SPF 30 mineral sunscreen) on my face. It’s scentless, which I love, goes on smooth and sheer, blends well, and does not leave a white cast or make my skin feel heavy, clogged, or greasy!
Looking forward to following the comments on this, because I’m still trying to find a toner and serum I love. I’ve been using Herbivore Botanical’s Nova Vitamin C serum and like it but am not sure I can detect a visible difference in a more even skin tone?

Wow, I have many products I’ve been using for years that I always finish & restock. Probably because I’ve always had problem skin and I am committed to my daily skincare routine….
1) Osmia Black clay soap (have used since Feb 2015 & will never go back)
2) Timeless Vitamin C/E/Ferulic serum (have been repurchasing since 2017)
3) The Ordinary Azelaic Acid, Niacinimide & Zinc serum, Chia seed oil, and Buffet serum (countless tubes/ bottles of each)
4) Dr. Jart Cicapair cream (probably around 6 tubes, possibly more?)
5) Pixi clarity toner (I’m on my 4th bottle, used to use SW Basics toner but can’t find this anymore)
6) Neogen dermalogy SPF 50 sunscreen (have been through 20+ tubes of this but recently switched to Hero Cosmetics Sun Shield because I can purchase it at Target)
7) Aztec Secret bentonite clay (probably on my 5th container? I mix it with manuka honey & ACV for a face mask 2-3x/week)
8) Burts Bees mango butter lip balm (I’ve lost count but I’m sure I’ve been through hundreds of tubes by now)
9) The Inkey List Beta Hydroxy serum (been through 4 bottles but have since switched back to TO salicylic acid solution- both work great)
10) Epiduo Forte prescription (have used this version since May 2017, but used the regular Epiduo for several years before that)
I switch out moisturizers & eye creams more frequently. I also added in the Coco*kind Ceramide serum about a month ago and that product is legitimately life changing!

I JUST figured out that probably 60% of my adult acne is actually sensitivity to the ingredient “fragrance,” and not just in face products, but also in HAIR products, since that makes contact with my skin. So, if you have any favorite fragrance-free hair products, I’m just beginning that journey!
Hero repeat-purchase products for me:
-DHC lip cream (in the pink tube, so so good);
-DHC tubing mascara
-Ilia mascara
-Bare Republic mineral face SPF 30 (not the SPF 70!)
-Maybelline Perfector 4-in-1 whipped matte (which gets mixed reviews but happens to work perfectly for me)
-RMS un-coverup, especially if you use their brush to apply it and are careful to get a dark enough shade once it’s out of the jar and on your face
-La Roche Posay toleriane ultra night moisturizer

The less one does to the skin barrier, the body.
Most products are designed to injure that barrier and then repair it. Example: washing your face and then applying moisturizer or oils.
Capitalism requires us to constantly need to purchase products, hence all the billion dollar beauty industry.
I don’t wash my face except with water. I also don’t put gunk on it. I wear hats for sun protection.
I eat a healthy diet, rich in veggies, legumes, fruit, nuts, seeds.
I garden and bird watch.
And I don’t stress over buying stuff.
It took me years to come to this realization. Hopefully more people are freed from the consumerist hamster wheel.

My mom and husband both are similar to you, in that neither washes their face with anything but water. I tried that for several months but my skin broke out horribly – I kept hoping it would self correct, but it never did. So I do all the other stuff you mention, but also use a gentle cleanser on my face. Maybe that’s part of the consumerist hamster wheel, but acne is painful and my life is better when I care for my skin in that way. Not everyone is blessed with your skin (or my mom’s or my husband’s).

Thank you for this comment! I apply religiously sunscreen as my skin can be reactive to sun but I’ll think of you and only wear a hat next times I go out for errands or at times where the sun is no too harsh.
And I agree with you that we need to change the narrative about our “needs of products” and look for our joy and contentement in other areas of life.

I completely understand this viewpoint and that’s amazing that you can get away with just using water to take care of your skin (so lucky!) But I have a similar experience as Lora, and whenever I don’t use a facial cleanser or moisturizer, my skin acts out in the form of breakouts and dry patches. Not sure what you mean by “gunk” but surely you recognize that other people have legitimate skin concerns that can improve with care and treatment, including some of the products people are discussing here. There is no need to put people down or belittle them for that. Personally your care routine wouldn’t work for me at all, and would probably make things worse. My skin would be both dry and breaking out at the same time. Nice that you can get by with nothing though!

Capitalism requires us alright but we’re responsible for our awareness and to make the right decision to what to buy or not buy. I love to experiment with different products, but for skin care I have a two step regimen that I think I’ll use forever: wash with Tata Harper clarifying face wash and then a few drops of Indie Lee’s Vitamin Infusion oil. I’m 49 and I’m loving the way my skin looks and feels.

The world of skincare is a confusing one that is flooded with new products all the time. I take recommendations seriously! This product is also well priced. I see soooo many serums around the $100 and above range.
Trying this one. Thank you!

During isolation I bought a super affordable skin consultation with healthyskinglows on Instagram. She is a scientist who uses her knowledge for skin health. She simplified my already simple routine. I use vanicream moisturizer cera vae face wash raw honey mask and oat flour as exfoliator. She also suggested squalane oil. I recently started using it religiously. It’s in my sunscreen, I use it to remove sunscreen, and after I wash my face before I moisturize. My skin looks better!!!!
I wish I had know all in my teens 20s and a chunk of my 30s to go gentle.

Love this question, and now I’m super curious about the serum!
My “good to the last drop” products:
– The Body Shop’s peppermint foot lotion
– Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream (pricey so only a couple times a year but…it’s my favorite body moisturizer!)
– Dr. Teal’s epsom salts (Target online has a lot of hard-to-find varieties, I love the coconut one!)
– Megababe Thigh Rescue
– Laneige lip mask

Woohoo this is my kind of post!
Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel – I struggle with dry skin in the winter months and a few drops in the morning and evening have eliminated flaky skin.
Revitalash Eyelash Conditioner – a splurge but it WORKS!
Cerave PM Face Moisturizer
Olay Complete Moisturizer with sunscreen for sensitive skin SPF 15
Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel Cream (for AM, layers beautifully under concealer)
BeautyCounter Countertime Ultra Renewal Eye Cream (for night)
Fresh Sugar lip balm
Looking forward to reading these!!

Yes to CeraVe PM! I love buying the CVS brand version when they have sales.

Oh my goodness YES! This serum saved my freaking skin. I had terrible acne before switching to this serum with plain old Cerave moisturizer. At night I use their lactic acid serum and my skin has never been better. I wouldn’t say I have “glass skin” by any means… my pores and texture still exist. But no more acne!

I have somewhat sensitive skin in that I tend to have redness from broken capillaries, something that runs in my family. In the summer I can use gentle serums and actives like CeraVe retinol and Naturium Vitamin C but in the cold months it’s rich moisturizers only to protect my skin. I’m loyal to brands like Lubriderm body lotion (I’m 51 and I have been using it since high school), EltaMd UV Clear spf, Statia Liquid Gold moisturizer and Statia Velvet Cleansing Milk (a great 1st cleanse for removing makeup
and sunscreen followed by CeraVe Cream to Foam cleanser). I avoid any products with scents or essential oils so I don’t weaken my skin barrier.

I’ve had a hard day. I fully intend to scour the comments later on and buy myself a little pick me up based on the recommendations. I will also do something nice for someone else because that’s a non-superficial way to feel better!!

As a fellow sensitive-skin soul, this rec (as well as the ones in the comments) are intriguing. My skin even reacted to Cetaphil so I am super anxious about trying new products! The product I recommend for other sensitive types is Vanicream Gentle Face Wash. I love it. It’s a drugstore brand but I had never heard of it before I saw the dermatologist Shereene Idriss recommend it in one of her YouTube videos. I’ve gone through a couple bottles at this point and it continues to be great. Cleansing without stripping and no irritation.

I’ve never heard of Vanicream Gentle Face Wash before, but I want to check that out!
I do use Cetaphil though, and my skin doesn’t react to that, so if you’re interested in the serum I’d recommend trying a sample first just in case it has something that might cause irritation for you! <3

Trader Joe’s gel moisturizer is great; I’m finishing my second tub and just bought a third! It’s also really cheap. The other product I repurchase is the Hawaiian Tropic weightless facial sunscreen. I use it every day and it smells amazing.

I have bought on repeat the following for years:
DHC Oil cleanser – melts away whatever is on your face.
Cervae Hydrating Facial Cleanser.
Acure Resurfacing Glycolic and Unicorn root cleanser
Versed The Shortcut Overnight Facial Peel
I am on my first bottle of iS CLINICAL Super Serum Advance (a vitamin C serum) and I plan on NEVER being out of it. It makes you GLOW and you only need 4-5 drops per night. It’s not inexpensive, but the bottle lasts a long time. I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for some extra “ooomph” in their skin care regimen.

Asarai red clay mask. Use 2-3 times a week and watch your skin totally change. I have very sensitve skin, am in my mid 30’s and don’t get nearly enough sleep but maybe a little too much sun. This evens my skin tones, never feels tight or ‘burns’ like other masks and upon rinsing my skin literally glows. I have actually stocked up on them to ensure I never, ever run out. Their night serum and antioxidant serum are also wonderful.

I started using that a year ago with my sensitive and acne prone skin and it is 100% worth it. I feel the cost gets justified from everything else I have been able to stop (treatment serums, lotions, masks) because my skin is just clearer with fewer products.

I highly recommend Maelove’s Glow Maker serum as a cheaper dupe to Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic. I started using Maelove products at the beginning of the pandemic (other favorites are the NIA 10 serum and the Night Renewal Gycolic Acid Cream) and those products have transformed my skin. I never wear foundation or tinted moisturizer now which is not something I’d be confident doing pre-2020.
And for my friends out there with sensitive skin… in part I think what is working for me to prevent breakouts is just sticking with a routine. There was nothing worse for my skin than trying free samples of skin care products.

I TOTALLY agree with the sticking to a routine bit. Such a good tip.
For a while, finding and nailing the routine down was really hard for me, because I’d buy products based off reviews from other blogs or friends, and then would end up with a breakout or reaction. So what helped me was getting the reviews of products from people who have similar skin to me i.e. sensitive, combination skin, and then getting samples of the products that worked for them.

Marguerite, I came here to say the same thing about Maelove’s Glow Maker serum! Complete game-changer! I’m on my 5th (6th? 7th? who’s counting?) bottle. It’s effective yet gentle, at a great price point, and makes my skin feel (and look!) hydrated and healthy. 11/10 would recommend!

I’ve heard good things about this serum and have been meaning to try it–this post might be the thing that puts me over the edge, especially since now I think they sell it at Target.
I’m a big fan of Neutrogena’s HydroBoost Water Gel–I get the City Shield version, which has SPF 25, to use during the day and the regular version to use at night. Not super-cheap, but it lasts a while, so it’s worth it for me.
