For 2021, I’ve returned to celebrating random holidays of the year through roundups. I recently learned about Teddy Bear Day, which is on September 9 every year. A brief history of teddy bears (according to various sources on the internet): during a hunting trip in 1902, then President of the United States, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, refused to shoot a bear tied to a tree, deeming it unsportsmanlike. Shortly thereafter, “Teddy’s bears” began appearing in the US and Europe, apparently designed simultaneously by several businesses, inspired by political cartoons of the day. Besides scrolling through teddy bear crochet patterns for inspiration, you can also celebrate this day by knitting a bear, sewing a bear, or by participating in a charitable event. Several organizations coordinate teddy bear collections for children in need during Teddy Bear Day, so check your local news for details.
